Documented History

Ann was living in Page County, Virginia, as a girl in 1846. She is called out in Henry Brumback’s will of 21 February of that year, where he indicates that she is to remain with his wife Mary for the duration of Mary’s life, and to be sold among his heirs after her death, and the estate papers confirm that Ann remained with Mary Brumback after the estate was settled in April 1846. What happened to Ann after that date, and particularly after Mary’s death in March 1860, is not known. No further documents have yet been found.

Speculations

Ann is listed as a girl in 1846, suggesting she was born sometime after 1831.

A woman and child, and, separately, a boy named Harrison, are listed in the records of Mary Brumback’s estate in June 1860. The woman may be Ann, and she may be the mother of one or both of the children. The records indicate that the unnamed woman and child were sold to Mary’s son Henry, who was indeed one of her husband’s heirs. Harrison was sold to Mary’s son John, another heir.

Connections

Dick and Dennis were enslaved with Ann on the Henry Brumback farm in 1846.
